How to Grow Direct sow after all danger of frost, once soil has warmed well — pumpkins are very cold-sensitive and grow best in warm soil. Plant in hills or rows with plenty of room to sprawl, or trellis for smaller spaces (fruit may need support if trellised). Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit set, and water at the base to reduce disease. Hand-pollination can help fruit set if pollinator activity is low. Stop watering as much as fruit matures and skin hardens, and harvest once the rind resists a fingernail scratch and the vine has begun to die back.

Good to Know Jarrahdale's thick, hard rind gives it excellent storage life — properly cured pumpkins can keep for several months in a cool, dry spot, longer than most jack-o'-lantern types.
