Fall-Planted Cottage Blend | Plant in Sweater Weather, Bloom Next Spring | Cool-Season Cutting Garden

The kind of afternoon that calls for a flannel, a warm drink, and dirt under your nails one more time before winter — Sweater Weather Sowing is the blend you plant in that exact mood, then forget about until spring hands you the payoff.

Hand-blended from Frizzle Sizzle Raspberry Pansy, Frizzle Sizzle Lemonberry Pansy, Bachelor's Button 'Tall White', and Ammi (Bishop's Flower), every variety named. Ruffled raspberry and lemonberry pansies low in front, crisp white Bachelor's Button and lacy Ammi rising up behind — a cottage-toned bed that quietly overwinters as small plants before bursting into bloom the moment spring arrives.

What You'll Love

  • Plant once in fall, harvest a full spring cutting garden
  • Blooms weeks ahead of anything spring-sown
  • Ruffled pansy texture paired with airy Ammi and clean white Bachelor's Button
  • Cold-hardy and low-maintenance over winter
  • Every variety named, never a mystery mix

Planting Information

  • Sun: Full sun to part sun
  • Plant type: Hardy annual
  • Germination: 10–20 days in cool soil
  • Best soil temperature: 50–65°F
  • Planting depth: Surface, needs light to germinate
  • Spacing: 6–12 inches apart (pansies want less room than Bachelor's Button and Ammi)
  • Bloom time: Overwinters, blooms the following spring
  • Height: 6–36 inches (pansies stay low and compact; Bachelor's Button and Ammi rise up behind them)

How to Grow Sow outdoors in October or November — this blend genuinely wants a fall planting date. Press seeds onto the soil surface rather than burying them; all four varieties benefit from light and cool temperatures to germinate. Keep soil lightly moist through germination. Expect your seedlings to spend winter as small, low rosettes — completely normal. Once spring growth resumes, resume regular watering, and cut freely once blooms open for a long-lasting spring bouquet.

Good to Know No extra winter protection is needed in zone 8a and similar mild-winter climates — these are bred to overwinter outdoors without help. The pansies will bloom lowest and earliest, with Bachelor's Button and Ammi following as the weather warms. Please make sure you know your growing zone!
