How to Grow Direct sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in fall in mild climates — poppies dislike transplanting, so direct sowing is best. Scatter seed on the surface and press in gently; do not cover, as light is needed to germinate. Thin seedlings once they have a few true leaves. Poppies bloom and fade quickly, so succession sow every couple of weeks for a longer harvest window.

Good to Know Shirley poppies are notoriously short-lived once cut but can be conditioned by searing stem ends briefly in hot water right after cutting to extend vase life.
